Disaster watch · Landslide

Slopes give way after heavy rain

  • Watch for cracks, tilting trees and muddy streams
  • Move away from the slope path, not downhill along it
  • Avoid hill roads during and after heavy rain

Know your slope: heavy rain, cutting and loose soil are a dangerous mix.

Landslide

Safety guide

Movement of rock, soil or debris down a slope, often triggered by heavy rain, earthquakes or construction.

~12% landAbout an eighth of India's land is prone to landslides, mostly in the Himalaya and Western Ghats.

Before

  • Watch for new cracks in walls or ground and tilting trees or poles
  • Avoid building on steep slopes or near drainage channels
  • Keep an ear on rainfall warnings in hilly areas

During

  • Move away from the path of the slide quickly
  • Listen for rumbling or cracking sounds
  • Curl into a ball and protect your head if you cannot escape

After

  • Stay away from the slide area; more slides can follow
  • Report broken roads, water and power lines
  • Check for trapped people and direct rescuers to them
